Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor physical therapy (PT) is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the female pelvic floor muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues. It aims to address issues such as pain, incontinence, and sexual dysfunction by assessing and treating imbalances in the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor therapy and treatment may include exercises, manual therapy, and education on proper body mechanics. This therapy is often recommended for individuals experiencing problems related to childbirth, surgery, or conditions that cause pelvic floor dysfunction. At Nurture Women’s Health & Fertility, our pelvic floor physical therapist will tailor the approach to each individual's needs.

Pelvic Floor PT can help with the following symptoms:

  • Separation, pain, or weakness in abdominal muscles

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Difficulty holding back a bowel movement

  • Low Back Pain

  • Sciatica

  • Tailbone pain

  • Hip pain

  • Pubic bone pain

  • Difficulty holding back gas

  • Pain during sex

  • Urinary leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise

  • Urinary urgency or frequency

Frequently Asked Questions

  • During a pelvic floor PT evaluation, you can expect a thorough assessment of your medical history, symptoms, and any relevant information. Your appointment time will involve interventions and education that are specific to your condition and provided directly by your pelvic floor physical therapist in a one-on-one format. This may involve skilled internal/external manual techniques, guided exercise to address muscle deficits found during your initial evaluation for pelvic floor strengthening, and breath-work coordination training for pressure management. Internal/external techniques are only utilized within your comfort level.

  • Most people are in physical therapy for at least 10-12 sessions, depending on the severity and history of symptoms. We will tailor your appointments to what YOU need. At the end of each appointment, we are going to give you things you can do on your own between your appointments that don't require our skilled supervision and will continue to benefit your pelvic health. We want to make this healing process quick and efficient for you. We work together as a team to come up with your personalized treatment plan.

  • At Nurture Women's Health & Fertility, we prioritize one-on-one, quality time and individualized care- the patient is always our focus. Most clinics have physical therapy aides that complete much of the therapy, and with Nurture, the patient will only work with the pelvic floor physical therapist - this is unique! In other settings, a patient may only see the physical therapist for 10 minutes and have appointments more frequently to achieve the same results we'll achieve at Nurture in less time. Unfortunately, our medical system, as it stands, is limited by what insurance allows or approves, and this does not allow for patient-centered care. We are happy to provide you with a detailed medical care receipt (called a superbill), which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
